Position Description

The McGill University Department of Medicine, Division of Geriatric Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be determined according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure. This position is conditional on the Institution successfully obtaining a PEM (i.e. physician permit) for this position.

The Department of Medicine is a leader in academic medicine. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The McGill University Health Centre, the Jewish General Hospital, and St- Mary’s Hospital are major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.

The Division of Geriatric Medicine is one of fifteen divisions within the Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The Division is highly committed to excellence in clinical care and innovation, research, and medical education. We are 15 clinician-teachers and 4 clinician-scientists.

The Division has a rich history of research excellence and international profile in many areas including care, education and training, geroscience, cognition and evaluation of services to older adults. Current research areas include: (i) the interactions between bone, muscle and fat and the elucidation of common mechanisms and pathways associated with the pathophysiology of osteoporosis, sarcopenia, osteosarcopenia and frailty in older persons; (ii) health service research to improve care trajectories of older adults in situations of vulnerability, especially persons with dementia; (iii) impact of music therapy in geriatric care; (iv) nutrition and exercise as key determinants of health; (v) promotion of mobility and falls prevention; (vi) dementia care and caregivers support, among others.

The Division hosts one of Canada’s leading Geriatric Medicine training programs. In addition to playing an important clinical role in the Department, division members have excellent opportunities for collaborative educational and research endeavors with protected time for scholarly activities to ensure a rewarding and fulfilling career development.

The successful candidate will be based at the McGill University Health Centre and/or the Jewish General Hospital and/or the St-Mary’s Hospital. The incumbent will also be appointed as the McGill Director of the Division of Geriatric Medicine. The incumbent will have a demonstrated record of success in academic performance and leadership and draw on strong interpersonal skills to inspire best practices and innovation. They will foster excellence in teaching, patient care, and research within the Division and will demonstrate a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in these activities.

The successful candidate will promote independent and collaborative research and fulfill administrative responsibilities at the institutional, university, regional, and provincial levels. The incumbent will be expected to maintain a clinical practice at the McGill University Health Centre and/or the Jewish General Hospital and/or the St-Mary’s Hospital.

The Department of Medicine is seeking a transformational leader who will take a high performing Division to the next level of academic excellence. Applicants are encouraged to simultaneously apply to, and be considered for, the MUHC Director of the Division Geriatric Medicine, although this is not required. 

The successful candidate will have a clear vision of the evolving nature of Geriatric Medicine, a demonstrated ability to communicate that vision, and the skill to encourage others to share it. The ideal candidate will be a unifying force strengthening cross-site collaboration as well as the ability to engage with external government and non-governmental organizations.

The McGill Division Director will ensure the pursuit of a common academic agenda for McGill Geriatric Medicine at all its sites—including a focus on the following aspects:

1) Education, specifically undergraduate and postgraduate initiatives in Geriatric Medicine;
2) Research, including promoting, supporting, and incentivizing McGill-wide Geriatric Medicine research initiatives;
3) Clinical innovation;
4) Faculty development, mentorship, and wellness; and,
5) Cross-cutting advancement initiatives.
 

The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (i.e., research, teaching, supervision of students are residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must:

  • Hold an MD degree and must hold, or be eligible for, licensure in the province of Quebec;

  • Have completed subspecialty training in Geriatric Medicine;

  • Be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);

  • Hold certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec;  

  • Possess relevant leadership experience;

  • Demonstrate internationally-recognized academic accomplishment in Geriatric Medicine research and teaching;

  • Have clinical expertise suited to tertiary hospital settings;

  • Have experience in training students, residents, and fellows in clinical settings;

  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
