Position Summary

We are seeking a PRN (Hourly) Chaplain to provide on-site spiritual care services at VCU Tappahannock Hospital, which is a community hospital treating a wide range of medical conditions. The PRN (Hourly) Chaplain will offer professional multi-faith sensitive spiritual and emotional care to the patients, families, visitors, and team members at Tappahannock Hospital. The PRN (Hourly) Chaplain is a member of the VCU Department of Patient Counseling Department and the VCU Health Department of Spiritual Care. They serve on the interdisciplinary team with primary spiritual care responsibilities in various clinical environments as assigned.  

Duties typically include responding to spiritual care requests and providing proactive spiritual care interventions. These requests and interventions may include, spiritual distress, religious support and connection, aligning a patient’s care with their values, Advance Care Planning (ACP), care at the time of death, grief and bereavement support and being a caring and supportive presence to other team members. For a Board Certified Chaplain, there may be other duties as well. The hours scheduled may be a mix of days, evenings, overnights, and weekends, depending on our need and the PRN (Hourly) Chaplain’s availability.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree (BA, BS) at an institution recognized by CHEA (Council on Higher Education Accreditation)
  • One or more units of Clinical Pastoral Education certified by the Association for
    Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. (ACPE)
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as an employee at VCU

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Board Certified, Provisionally Board Certified, or Board Eligible Chaplain by one of the following: Association of Professional Chaplains (APC); National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC); Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC); or the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association Canadienne des Soins Spirituels (CASC/ACSS)
  • MDiv, seminary degree or equivalent
  • Experience working in a community hospital
  • Experience precepting students in their first unit of CPE
