Position Summary

The Operations & Facilities Management Department at Washington University School of Medicine is committed to delivering a comprehensive range of services to support the medical campus.

Proactively analyze and investigate impending threats and potentially complex criminal schemes directed at the School of Medicine. Operate/manage a surveillance camera system to collect evidence of criminal activity and significant administrative wrongdoing. Author crime avoidance and prevention products with the goals of increasing crime awareness and application of relevant security strategies. Coordinate and present crime avoidance and prevention training for the campus community. Perform data collection and analysis activities in support of the university’s compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act). Collect, interpret, and disseminate intelligence information in support of operations and physical security. Take immediate action to direct Protective Services personnel as necessary. Apply advanced editing and discernment of detail skills to ensure the quality, accuracy, and completeness of departmental communications.

We oversee maintenance and operations for 65 buildings, covering more than 11.1 million gross square feet of space. This includes the 11-story, 609,000-square-foot neuroscience research building, which houses one of the world’s highest concentrations of neuroscientists. Our responsibilities include operational and administrative support, strategic planning, and project management.

Furthermore, as the School of Medicine continues to expand its presence both on and off campus in areas such as teaching, clinical care, and research, our team remains instrumental in ensuring the seamless delivery of clinical care, advancing research initiatives, and facilitating educational endeavors.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct sensitive investigations and participate in threat assessment activities originating from Protective Services, Human Resources, Internal Audit, Risk Management, Faculty Practice Plan, and other campus subunits.      
  • Investigate and author original criminal intelligence products, including alerts, bulletins, and BOLOs, for Protective Services officers and counterparts of other departments and agencies. Coordinate activities/collaborate with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, Barnes-Jewish Hospital Public Safety, and neighborhood security agencies. Research, investigate, and compose original crime avoidance and prevention training materials for university consumers including students, employees, and visitors.                                         
  • Coordinate and present orientation and in-service training sessions for students and employees on the topic of crime avoidance/prevention and routinely carry out proactive outreach activities with campus clinical, research, and educational leaders to raise awareness of programs offered by the division.                           
  • Investigate facts and circumstances of near-campus crimes for nexus to the university and Clery Act reporting requirements. Assist in compiling data and other information for the annual campus security report as mandated by the Clery Act. Perform day-to-day Clery Act reporting activities, including populating the campus crime log.
  • Execute other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Five years of experience as a law enforcement investigator or a combination of a bachelor’s or master’s degree, graduation from an accredited law enforcement academy, and three years of experience in a professional law enforcement investigative role may be acceptable.
  • Graduation from an accredited law enforcement academy.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a Metropolitan St. Louis Security License within 6 months of employment.

Salary Range

$53,100.00 - $90,600.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
