Job Summary:

The University of Colorado School of Medicine seeks a physician of unique vision, enthusiasm, and experience as Vice Chair of Education, Department of Medicine. The ideal candidate for the leadership role is an academic physician with expertise in medical education with strong backgrounds in program building, curricular design, and a deep understanding of ACGME requirements and objectives. This leader will drive improvement informed by goals established by the Department of Medicine, University of Colorado School of Medicine to fulfill the department’s mission to be a leader in delivering high quality medical education across multiple campuses.  The primary responsibility of the Vice Chair for Education is to oversee the complex educational mission of the Department, including the coordination of faculty and trainees involved in that mission. This oversight includes educational initiatives across the spectrum of activities related to undergraduate medical education (UME), graduate medical education (GME) at both residency and fellowship levels, and professional development such as continuing medical education (CME) and other faculty development programs. The Vice Chair is also responsible for several major conference initiatives annually, including scheduling and coordinating Medical Grand Rounds. Finally, the Vice Chair of Education is responsible for all educational grant programs run through the DOM, including the faculty-focused Program for the Advancement of Clinician Educators (PACE) as well as the fellow-focused Medical Educators grants. The Vice Chair must exhibit the qualities required to be a successful and compassionate leader in a complex, matrixed environment, including working collaboratively across various organizations

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Chair in creating a conducive environment for educational activities and learners, acting as the primary advocate for the enhancement and resources of the training programs.
  • Offer comprehensive oversight, support, guidance, development, and empowerment to a diverse group of leaders within our educational initiatives, including the Internal Medicine and Medicine-Pediatrics residency programs, as well as all ACGME and non-ACGME specialty fellowship programs within the Department.
  • Recommend strategies to the Chair regarding educational program priorities, financial requirements, recruitment strategies, and the necessary support infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Vice Chair to establish and upkeep the annual budgets for educational initiatives.
  • Engage with colleagues at the School of Medicine, UCHealth, the Graduate Medical Education Office, and other key educational and administrative figures to advance educational endeavors and projects.
  • Refine and advance the techniques, technology, and systems utilized for monitoring the performance of trainees and faculty.
  • Create and implement evaluation methodologies and criteria for educational programs aimed at assessment, enhancement, and strategic planning.
  • Guarantee that all educational offerings adhere to or surpass the compliance norms and policies, including those related to regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Engage with leaders and faculty members across all of our training sites (Anschutz Medical Campus, VA, Denver Health, National Jewish) to ensure a coordinated and consistent educational experience. 
  • Affirm that educational efforts are aligned with our departmental values, highlighting the importance of diversity and inclusion.
  • Direct research initiatives involving residents and fellows and encourage faculty engagement as mentors in trainee research projects.
  • Lead and support the recruitment of clinician educators, acclimatize new faculty to educational roles and responsibilities, cultivate a faculty culture of participation in educational programs, and offer mentorship to faculty members keen on medical education or those pursuing educational careers.
  • Assess and monitor the educational contributions of faculty members to ensure they meet the Department’s educational goals; encourage faculty to compile ongoing records of educational contributions (e.g., teaching portfolios) for tenure and promotion considerations; and work with division chiefs and educational leaders to acknowledge exceptional teaching efforts.
  • Manage faculty development initiatives focused on teaching skills, trainee evaluation methods, and providing effective feedback.
  • Encourage faculty to explore institutional and national professional development opportunities for educational leadership and skills.
  • Engage in philanthropy events and initiatives aimed at generating support for educational programs, involving alumni and faculty.
  • Act as the Chair's delegate on committees concerning education, when necessary, or as appointed by the Chair.
  • Collaborate with UCHealth and other department vice chair leadership to share best practices in medical training and explore interprofessional education opportunities.

Onsite – this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Denver, Colorado.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: 

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Associate Professor or Professor, based on experience and qualifications as indicated below: 

Associate Professor

  • MD, DO, MD/Ph.D., or international equivalent terminal degree with board certification.
  • Colorado Medical License at time of hire
  • Board certification in internal medicine
  • Mid-career associate rank 

Professor

  • MD, DO, MD/Ph.D., or international equivalent terminal degree with board certification.
  • Colorado Medical License at time of hire
  • Board certification in internal medicine
  • Full professor rank 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of UME or GME educational administrative experience with a proven track record of educational leadership and excellence in teaching
  • Ability to work independently
  • Flexibility in daily tasks

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

·     Associate Professor\: $229,000-$275,0000 per year

·     Professor\: $250,000- $315,000 per year

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
