Description

A Group Fitness Instructor is a customer service focused position delivering the highest quality level of instruction to our members exemplifying professionalism and insuring we adhere to our mission statement. This individual contributes to member retention by providing instruction and expertise to assist clients in achieving their fitness goals and healthier lifestyles.

Essential Functions

To be knowledgeable of and adhere to all JCA policies.

To work collaboratively with the Fitness and Wellness Director, Assistant FW Director, and fellow instructors.

To work closely, cooperatively, and amicably with all staff members outside of the Fitness Department when appropriate.

To plan for all classes in advance ensuring they are fun, contain variety and are appropriate to the fitness level of the participants keeping them safe and injury free.

To begin and end class on time.

To learn the names of all participants and greet all by name with a smile and enthusiasm.

To serve as a fitness role model to clients and peers; practice what you preach!

To report all concerns and issues of members or yourself to the FW Director.

To report all faulty equipment immediately to the FW Director or Assistant Director.

To maintain a positive, friendly, smiling demeanor always putting personal issues aside.

To keep accurate attendance records in each class.

To keep all certifications current and up to date including CPR and AED.

To replace all equipment used with participants in its proper location leaving the area neat for others sharing space and equipment respectfully.

To be knowledgeable and aware of JCA programming in all other departments to be able to discuss, refer participants to interesting programs and answer questions if necessary.

To attend all required meetings and JCA events as necessary to represent the FW Department.

To respond to JCA e-mail correspondence in a timely way as necessary to your position.

To stay current with the ever-changing fitness industry through professional development and personal research relevant to your position.

To dress professionally appropriate to the class you are teaching.

To meet at pre-determined times with the FW Director or Assistant Director to discuss/assess your job performance.

To be aware that class attendance is a high priority in determining member satisfaction with the group fitness program. Consistently low attendance can result in class cancellation, a change in instructor or substitution of another type of class.

To be familiar with all equipment (sound included) procedures and opening/closing the fitness studio. This may include checking out the key, locking the room, adjusting fans, etc.

To proactively maintain and keep current all certifications.

 

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Must be at least 21 years of age and have experience in group fitness instruction.

Language Skills

Ability to speak grammatically correct English and must totally comprehend English when spoken to at a normal speed.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to read, write and comprehend the concept of time.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to use good judgement, i.e., handling difficult situations that may arise, how to react in an emergency, etc.

Other Skills and Abilities

Must be able to follow directions; must be able to relay information to others; must be able to read memos, notes, and in-service materials; must be able to write using proper English, sentence structure; and must be able to successfully complete CPR, first aid and other in-service requirements as needed. Must be able to navigate software that might be required for the job.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be physically fit enough to move, stand, lift, bend, push, or lift to 50 pounds if necessary. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee may occasionally be required to run.

Work Environment

The working conditions are located on a one level floor with some steps, air- conditioned and on the bus route. The noise level will vary with the type of class. There may be exposure to bodily fluids.
