Job Description:
This position provides comprehensive spiritual care to patients of all ages and their families. Services include but are not limited to, individual patient/resident support related to spiritual care, family support and prayer as well as employee support.
Provide support to patients and families facing grief and end of life issues, to include assisting with decision making and Advanced Care Planning. Lead religious ceremonies of worship, rituals and other spiritual care programs as directed. Documents care and support provided and participates in meetings and educational programs. These services are provided on an on-going basis as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Serves patients in outpatient, inpatient, and residential facilities depending on Essentia Health location. Participate and/or lead committees, department improvement initiatives, and mentoring of CPE interns and other team members as directed. Develop and deliver education to different disciplines as directed.
Education Qualifications:
Chaplain I
Educational Requirement:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Theology, Divinity, Ministry or a related field, or three years professional experience in related field, necessary to gain understanding in the relationship of pastoral care to medical care.
- Successful completion of 1 ACPE accredited unit of CPE.
Licensure/Certification Requirement:
- Associate Membership in NACC (National Association of Catholic Chaplains) or APC (Association of Professional Chaplains) or NAJC (National Association of Jewish Chaplains) or SCA (Spiritual Care Association) is strongly preferred.
Special Requirement: Ecclesiastical endorsement: For a Catholic priest/minister or vowed religious by his/her superior and the local Bishop.
At time of hire and annually documentation from the chaplain’s religious tradition or endorsing body is required, and must indicate continued endorsement, good standing, or other affirmation of support as is appropriate to their tradition.
Chaplain II
Educational Requirement:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Theology, Divinity, Ministry or a related field, or three years professional experience in related field, necessary to gain understanding in the relationship of pastoral care to medical care.
- A graduate degree in Theology, Divinity, Ministry or a related field counseling, or some other job related field is preferred.
- Successful Completion of 2 ACPE accredited CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) units is required at the time of hire. Completion of an additional 2 ACPE accredited unit is required within 24 months of hire.
Licensure/Certification Requirement:
- Associate Membership in NACC (National Association of Catholic Chaplains) or APC (Association of Professional Chaplains) or NAJC (National Association of Jewish Chaplains) or SCA (Spiritual Care Association) is strongly preferred.

Chaplain Masters
Educational Requirement:
- Master’s degree in theology, Divinity, Ministry or a related field
- Successful Completion of 3 ACPE accredited units of CPE with 4th ACPE accredited unit completed within 12 months and then board certification required within 24 months.
Certification/Licensure Required:
- Membership in NACC (National Association of Catholic Chaplains) or APC (Association of Professional Chaplains) NAJC (National Association of Jewish Chaplains), or SCA (Spiritual Care Association) is strongly preferred.
- Certification with the NACC, APC or SCA required within 24 months of hire

- Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license as verified through appropriate licensing agency.
- Proof of current motor vehicle insurance.
Duluth Hospice:
- Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license as verified through appropriate licensing agency.
- Proof of current motor vehicle insurance.
Itasca Hospice:
- Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license as verified through appropriate licensing agency.
- Proof of current motor vehicle insurance.
