Instructor and Fitness Assistant-Per Diem

I. BASIC PURPOSE OF POSITION:


The Fitness Assistant is responsible for general supervision of the Aquatics and Fitness Center. The Fitness Assistant is responsible for monitoring, setting up, maintaining and cleaning equipment, welcoming residents, guests, explaining programs and activities, teaching residents/guests/other SV employees how to use the equipment, and providing basic fitness information. Under the guidance and training from the Senior Fitness Program Coordinator instructs Fitness Center and aquatic classes, to include the Arthritis Foundation Aquatic classes, conducts private new resident orientations, creates beginning and progressive exercise programs for residents, reports and resolves complaints, maintains attendance records and ensures rules and regulations are enforced. The Fitness Assistant ensures residents and guests have a safe, positive and enjoyable experience. Flexibility in schedule to work evenings, weekends and holidays as it relates to implementation/supervision of programming and interaction with our residents.

Residents will feel better about themselves emotionally and physically. Quality of life will be enhanced, physical abilities will be maintained and physical decline will be delayed. There will be an increase in camaraderie and moral as a result of regular participation in fitness activities. Their outlook on life will be improved due to the overall impact of providing fitness program activities, thus creating a healthier lifestyle that fosters their highest level of function. Improved efficiency in the Fitness Center and Pool Programming.


 


IV. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:


High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). Certification in group exercise and/or personal training preferred. Prefer at least one year's recreation, physical fitness or customer service experience.


 


V. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


Minimum one (1) year proven experience as fitness attendant or assistant in public or private employment. Experience in developing exercise programs for geriatric population a plus. Experience in teaching and instructing physical activity is preferred and required within six (6) months of hire. Certification in older adult fitness is a plus. Any experience working with the geriatric population a plus. Basic knowledge on use of the fitness equipment


SKILLS, LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND/OR SPECIAL TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:


Current fitness instructor certificate preferred and required within six (6) months of hire. Must be First Aid, and CPR and AED certified; Excellent customer service skills required, flexibility, initiative, creativity and reliability; Ability to maintain strict confidentiality under HIPAA regulations; possession of organizational skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment; Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; Computer skills with multiple software programs; Familiar with Pool safety and water rescue protocol/Attend water rescue training. Obtain and maintain Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Instructor certificate which includes basic water rescue training certificate every three years; Ability to work with geriatric population, medical professionals, families, staff. English language a must. Able to pass pre-placement and Fingerprint clearance. Able to pass employment physical, TB exam, and obtain a fingerprint clearance as required by our licensure. Positive mental and physical maturity. Ability to work with diverse population of people and effectively communicate instructions.


 


VII. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES THAT MUST BE SAFELY PERFORMED WITH OR WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION WIHTOUT POSING A DIRECT THREAT TO OTHER EMPLOYEES, RESIDENTS AND STAFF:


WORK PERFORMANCE – job knowledge, quality, productivity, planning, creativity, initiative



  1. Perform fitness center opening and/or closing procedures during, before, and/or after business hours.

  2. Instruct land-based and aquatic classes on a weekly basis.

  3. Instruct Arthritis Foundation Aquatic (AFAP) classes weekly, after obtaining AFAP certification.

  4. Be responsible for all scheduled hours and if necessary, follow the appropriate substitution procedures.

  5. Keep accurate records as mandated by the Sr Fitness Program Coordinator. Record FC usage and all class attendance.

  6. Assist in general maintenance of the fitness center which includes cleaning up after classes, end of day clean-up, cleaning gym machines, dusting, sweeping, putting away all equipment, locking all cabinets, and other clean up as needed.

  7. Manage resident systems, which includes daily residentsign-in, member tracking, ensuring that each resident has a current health screening and physician release form on file; and resident/family/staff records are maintained in properly secured storage.

  8. During shifts, perform private new resident orientations to record necessary health history information for all new fitness program residents. Create exercise programs for residents and staff and progress programs as needed.

  9. Communicate with Assisted Living staff and residents to ensure Assisted Living resident participation in fitness programs and activities. When available escort residents to and from Fitness Center and pool, AL Nusteps and AL Fitness classes.

  10. Assist residents, family and staff with equipment.

  11. Maintain participation in Fitness activities and events by encouraging and reminding resident in person during Fitness activities and occasionally by phone call during down time.

  12. Ensure resident/family/staff adherence to all fitness program policies, procedures, and membership agreements.

  13. Ensure resident/family/staff are safely using fitness program equipment and free weights and tactfully suggest improvements for form and technique.

  14. Assists the Sr Fitness Program Coordinator with implementing and leads in fitness and wellness activities such as seminars, wellness classes, incentive programs, contests, and the newsletter.

  15. Assists the SR Fitness Program Coordinator in leading and also leads health and fitness lectures and discussions.

  16. In absence of Sr Fitness Program Coordinator is able to make decisions on staff schedule and fitness programming changes and change/update Electronic TV Board accordingly.

  17. Perform assigned maintenance duties daily, to keep all pieces of equipment clean and working; notifies facility management as needed regarding equipment repair.

  18. Notes large equipment repair needs in equipment repair binder; checks binder during quarterly maintenance.

  19. Perform daily supply checks to ensure that all fitness areas are organized and well supplied with necessary fitness inventory for member use.

  20. Tests and records daily levels of chlorine and PH in both pools.

  21. Informs Sr Fitness Program Coordinator when supplies are low; able to run errands to pick up supplies.

  22. Assist with ambulation and safe transferring of residents from chairs, scooters, walkers or wheelchairs.

  23. Perform other duties as assigned. Assist other departments when necessary and appropriately schedule around fitness responsibilities.

  24. Communicates building issues, system malfunctions, needs for repair (i.e; plumbing, pool mechanics, lighting, housekeeping needs) to maintenance or housekeeping pertaining to activities.

  25. Maintain strictest confidentiality, except when mandated reporting is required.

  26. Follow all HIPAA guidelines and requirements.

  27. Attend meetings, training, and workshops, as requested.

  28. Builds Community: Understands and embraces the role of volunteers; helps residents/family/guests/staff make connections to others and SV practices effective relationship-building techniques; understands the role of fund-raising in achieving SV mission.

  29. Contributes ideas for fitness programming and newsletter.

  1. Regular, punctual attendance. Flexibility in schedule as it requires working weekends, evenings and holidays.

MISSION, VISION, POLICY AND REGULATIONS - SV Philosophy, Judgment, Adherence to policy



  1. Familiarize self with Seacrest Village mission/vision, rules, policies and procedures and same with the Jewish Tradition as observed by our residents, family and guests.

  2. Observes safety regulations; to include but not limited to wearing appropriate safety equipment, reporting work related injuries, using proper body mechanics & responding to fire/disaster alarms and wearing security badge.

  3. Payroll/HR- uses current computer system to follow timekeeping policy utilizing timeclock to record all hours worked to include mandatory meal period of thirty minutes by the 5th hour of work and OT is authorized by supervisor.

  4. Wear appropriate clothing per facility and uniform policy to include name badge.

  5. As a matter of SV policy and federal and state law; attends HIPAA training, follows HIPAA confidentiality and privacy policy, applies “minimum necessary”, “needs to know” guidelines on all PHI information and reports non-compliance violations to Privacy Officer.

  6. As a mandated reporter per DOJ requirements; attends Mandated Reporter Abuse training meetings, will report all abuse incidents; physical, emotional, financial, sexual, verbal, completing the 1) SOC 341 form, mailing or faxing, 2) calling the ombudsmen and/or department of health services; for Assisted Living and Independent Living, call ombudsmen, and APS (adult protective services), and 3) informing supervisor so resident can be protected.

  7. Follow the corporate compliance standard and employee code of conduct, of performing work with an ethical behavior and utilizing proper business conduct and professional practice, that complies with applicable laws, rules and regulations; as serving the residents, preserving the organizational reputation, maintaining resident/employee trust, community respect. Reports non-compliance or concerns to Corporate Compliance Officer

IX. NON-ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:


Contributes and attends the resident assessment meetings; Assists the Activity Coordinator with activities.


 


X. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk on their feet for several hours at a time. Hands, fingers, arms are frequently used for holding, stretching, and reaching. The employee will be expected to be able to climb or balance, kneel, stoop, bend and crouch. The employee must be able to lift or move, unassisted, up to 50 lbs. Vision and hearing are required due to the safety of our residents.


DAILY TASKS:



  1. Performs minor custodial, and janitorial maintenance duties in such a manner that high levels of cleanliness are maintained; performs routine cleaning, floor care, and trash disposal.

  2. Sets up and takes down equipment and prepares facility for activities and events.

  3. Inspects Fitness Center equipment and maintains proper operating conditions.

  4. Completes daily work log, incident and accident reports, and requisitions for supplies and materials.

  5. Intervenes in resident activities and responds to emergencies according to City policies and procedures, and within scope of training.

  6. Provide Equipment Orientations –

    1. To prevent injuries and improper use of equipment, many fitness centers require new members to go through an equipment orientation. A fitness trainer or fitness attendant shows the new member how to use all the equipment in the fitness center at the one-on-one orientation. The member has the chance to test cardio equipment and see how the various programs work as well as practice correct form on weight training machines and free weights. It is also an opportunity for the new member to ask any fitness or health-related questions.




MONITORING EQUIPMENT



  1. Fitness equipment requires daily maintenance.

  2. Fitness assistants are responsible for wiping down and sanitizing the equipment every day. This prevents the spread of germs and keeps the machines running efficiently.

  3. Fitness assistants should also monitor the equipment for broken parts and report any problems immediately. If necessary, the assistants will place signs on the machine so exercisers do not use the machine while it is broken.

     


MONITORING FITNESS AREA



  1. Despite safety precautions and equipment orientations, injuries still happen in fitness centers. Therefore, fitness assistants monitor exercisers while they are working out.

  2. The fitness assistant is there in the event of an emergency or if someone gets hurt. The assistant is also able to watch how individuals are using the machines, provide spots and offer tips to members.
