Job Summary

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) position performs a wide range of technical procedures analyzing blood and various other body fluids in order to support the physician’s diagnosis and treatment of the patient. The MLS shall comply with standards and accrediting bodies including but not limited to AABB, CAP, CLIA, FDA, and Joint Commission.

 

Responsibilities

  • Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling, acceptability, processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test result according to departmental SOPs.
  • Follow department’s procedure in reporting STATS or critical results to providers.
  • Monitor, operate and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and all maintenance performed.
  • Make sure reagents/test kits have received dates, expiration dates, and if applicable opened dates.
  • Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Follow accrediting agency standards CAP, AABB, FDA, CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, Joint Commission and safety guidelines as described in their respective guidelines.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Participate in all applicable safety training sessions. Know the location and contents of the safety manual. Know the location/use of all applicable safety equipment.
  • Successfully completes department specific competencies.
  • Identifies and reports any safety hazards or concerns.
  • Makes suggestions for improvements of policies and procedures.
  • Performs teaching and training duties of position to other staff and potential employees.
  • Develops and assists in writing training guides and standard work documents.
  • Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures, and standards of conduct.
  • Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science or in a related science (example, laboratory sciences such as chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, hematology, clinical microscopy, cytogenetics, blood bank, molecular biology, cytotechnology, or immunology.

 

Certification:

  • Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by one of the following accrediting agencies is required.

o             Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)

o             Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)

o             Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the American Medical Technologists (AMT)

o             Medical Laboratory Scientist certified by the American Medical Technologists (AMT)

o             Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the Department of Health, Education & Welfare/US Department of Health & Human Services (HEW/HHS)

o             Technologist certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) in one of the following areas:

Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Cytogenetics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or Cytology

o             Technologist certified by the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB) in one of the following areas:

Medical Technologist, Andrology Laboratory Scientist, Embryology Laboratory Scientist, or Molecular Diagnostics Technologist

  • Beginning in January 2004, newly certified individuals must participate in The American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) Board of Registry (BOR) Certification Maintenance Program (required)

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum one (1) year of lab experience as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist
