Senior Nursing Role / Healthcare Manager

Introduction

A Jewish home in need of a Senior RN to oversee adults and older persons with profound intellectual disabilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

Reporting to Director

 

  1. Healthcare Management
  1. Together with the nursing team, manage all medical aspects of our clients, including; coordination of medical appointment and specialist referrals, chronic management and bi-annual clinical reviews, routine and emergency hospital admissions, palliative care services – to name a few.
  2. Together with the psycho-social and Allied health teams, oversee the psychiatric management of our residents and support the senior OT with the rollout of wellness programs at the home.  
  3. Keep in regular contact with family members to update them with ongoing management of their loved one’s health including medical referrals, incidents management, routine, chronic, acute, and emergency care, etc.
  4. With support from MDT, send annual written clinical progress reports to family members regarding the health and wellbeing of their loved ones.  

 

  1. Nursing management:
  1. Uphold clinical requirements and maintain nursing standards of the South African Nursing Council.
  2. Oversee the Nursing team and maintain high levels of clinical and nursing service delivery.
  3. Attend daily nursing handover meetings to ensure strong communication is upheld amongst all shifts.
  4. Run daily rounds with nurse on duty to ensure open channels of communication between nurses, unit carers and medical carers are upheld.
  5. Support the nurse on duty with all medical emergencies, voluntary and involuntary hospital admissions. 
  6. Oversee communication and administration with external clinicians, labs and pharmacies to ensure timeous and smooth service delivery of lab results, blister packs and other medications is provided throughout the year.
  7. Drive nursing operational and administrative excellence and manage all logistical coordination for medical procurement, which includes but is not limited to; medical equipment, medical supplies and PPE.
  8. Drive HR administration of nursing team – including: monthly shift plans, payroll and leave administration, performance and conduct management, as well as liaison with the various nursing agencies.
  9. Manage the induction and onboarding of agency nurses, and the ongoing training and development of the existing nursing team.   

 

  1. MDT Management
    1. Together with Director and Senior OT, provide ongoing management and administration of Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings & other external clinicians and healthcare service providers.
    2. Act as point of call for all matters relating to the community clinic and the three Doctors overseeing our residents.
    3. Support MDT, residents and their families with coordination of medical appointment and specialist referrals, hospitalisations and new admissions.    
    4. Support the Director and Senior OT with medical assessment and intake of new residents wishing to join the home. 
    5. Drive the incident management system, including administration, reporting and implementation.

 

  1. DoH/DSD Compliance
  1. Together with the Operations and facilities manager, drive all DoH related compliance requirements including reports and regulatory Inspections.
  2. Develop, review and update existing and new clinical and nursing Standard Operating Procedures (SoP’s)
  3. Maintain incident related administration and provide monthly progress report from the incident tracker to the MDT team and Director
  4. Together with Operations and facility manager, manage all clinical stock and equipment (such as: nursing fridge, ECG machine, suction machine, BP machines, thermometers and oximeters, oxygen, sitting scale, HP & Glucose meters, etc.)
  5. Together with the nursing team, ensure medication management meets compliance requirements and manage schedule 5 & 6 book and cupboard. 
  6. Attends H&S meetings and report back to the team on all relevant matters.

Desired Experience & Qualification

  1. General
    1. A registered nurse with a bachelor’s degree in nursing is essential.
    2. At least 5 years’ nursing and clinical management experience is essential, preference will be given to applicants with residential management work experience either in the private or NPO space.
    3. Minimum 1 year of work experience within a Bio-Psychosocial Multi-Disciplinary Team structures is advantageous, as well as exposure to working with adults and older persons diagnosed with profound intellectual and psychiatric disabilities.

  1. Excellent communication skills, able to communicate with multiple stakeholders such as: residents and their families, clinicians from the bio-psychosocial team, private and state healthcare professionals – to name a few.
  2. Strong inter-personal, leadership and assertiveness skills with the ability to lead and inspire for excellence. 
  3. Patient, warm and caring approaching for looking after vulnerable and non-verbal/speaking patients. 
  4. Team orientated person with a calm disposition, able to stay levelheaded in stressful situations and lead well under pressure.

 

  1. Excellent Administration and Organisational Skills
  1. Proficient and sound knowledge of Microsoft Suite an Office365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
  2. An organised individual who is able to multi-task and balance conflicting priorities to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment.
  3. A proactive individual who uses their initiative to ensure care service delivery remains at a high standard.
  4. A natural collaborator, comfortable working in a consultive style utilizing MDT philosophy for making clinical decisions for those who cannot advocate for themselves and facilitate consent independently.

Package & Remuneration

  • Hours of work: Mon – Friday: 07:00 – 16:00 / with limited after-hours on-call component for medical emergencies.
  • Nature of contract: Contract/Permanent  
  • Salary: R40,000 p/m
  • Benefits: CTC Medical Aid, Provident Fund, 25 days of AL, Year-end bonus
