The Center provides and initiates diversified social, educational, recreational and cultural programs within a Jewish setting. The JCC is a partner in serving the community, is affiliated with the JCC Association of North America and a beneficiary agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte.

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Camp Mindy Counselor is responsible for providing for the social, emotional and educational needs of each camper and the group as a whole during the camp season.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Under the supervision of Unit Heads, Counselors are responsible for planning, conducting, and supervising a variety of recreational activities for campers in Kindergarten and 1st Grade in a day camp setting, as well as the care and supervision of the campers assigned to their group.


Responsibilities:

  • Participate in staff training prior to the beginning of the camp program.
  • Supervision of a camp group (groups vary in size).
  • Supervise health, safety and activities of campers.
  • Follow weekly schedule of events and special activities.
  • Teach/assist in all areas.
  • Take initiative to analyze and solve problems.
  • Supervise and participate with campers in all daily activities.
  • Utilize appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Prepare camper reports and records as required.
  • Participate in parent related programs such as “Meet the Counselor”.
  • Attend and contribute to weekly staff meetings and trainings.
  • Interact with parents in a professional and polite manner.
  • Supervise, encourage and teach junior camp staff as assigned.
  • Any other responsibilities as assigned by Camp Director.
  • Assist in the clean-up of all activities and lunch area.
  • Write weekly Camper notes to be sent home.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Camping and/or leadership experience.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work well with children.
  • Good character and integrity.
  • The desire to work with children in a day-camp setting.
  • Commitment to building a safe, child-focused community.
